The 5 Best Comedy Clubs in Sydney for a Laugh-Filled Night

  • Consistent Calibre: I looked for venues that consistently feature high-calibre local professionals alongside seasoned international headliners, so you always watch polished routines.
  • Venue Acoustics: I looked for rooms designed for live performance, with low ceilings and focused acoustics that create a real connection between the audience and the comic.
  • Accessibility: I checked for regular weekly scheduling and simple online ticketing, alongside close proximity to major nightlife districts and public transit.
  • Bar Service: I checked for well-stocked bars or handy partnerships with nearby dining. The focus here is simply on fast, convenient drink service so you never have to miss a single punchline.
  • Grassroots Support: I gave weight to venues that support grassroots talent and host open-mic tryouts, along with high customer ratings.

Finding the perfect spot for a night of laughs can completely elevate your weekend plans. A great comedy club in Sydney offers an unbeatable mix of raw talent and cold drinks, perfectly matching Australia’s best entertainers.

I compiled this detailed guide to the top rooms currently operating to help you quickly discover your new favourite venue for live entertainment.

Whether you want a major showcase or a gritty open mic, these local stages deliver.

1. The Comedy Store

the-comedy-store

Website: https://www.comedystore.com.au/

Address: 122 Lang Rd, Moore Park

Contact: 02 72084484

Hours: Thursday, 6:30 PM – 10:30 PM | Friday, Saturday, 6:00 PM – 10:30 PM

Operating out of Moore Park, The Comedy Store gives you an authentic, traditional stand-up atmosphere. It has hosted the biggest names in comedy since opening its doors in 1981.

If you’re after top-tier acts, this is one of the best options in the city. I think the line-ups are consistently strong.

The flagship 90-minute showcases are especially good value. You’ll see up to eight homegrown and international comedians perform back-to-back.

I’d recommend grabbing a drink at the lounge bar before heading into the main theatre. There’s also continuous table service during the show, so you won’t miss a punchline while ordering another round.

My only small gripe is the extra fee when you book tickets online. Other than that, it’s a great choice for a proper night of stand-up.

Pros

  • Operating continuously since 1981
  • Showcases feature up to 8 comedians
  • Non-stop table drink service available
  • Features both local and international talent

Cons

  • Online bookings incur additional fees

Will keep going back

A regular to the Comedy Store, I find each experience great. Our favourite Julia Wilson was recently performing, and we just love her. Bar service is great, the venue location is convenient, and the club is managed well. Ample parking and places to eat before shows, average but fine. Live comedy is the best! Will keep going back.

Always a great night

Always a great night at the Comedy Store, with a selection of comedians, some really funny, others not so much. Your ticket includes a $25 voucher for drinks or snacks from the bar, and there are QR codes on the tables to order more during the show.

2. Kings of Comedy

Website: https://koc.lol/comedy-club-sydney-australia/

Address: 3 Wise Monkeys, 555 George St, Sydney

Contact: [email protected]

Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM | Saturday, 12:00 PM – 5:00 PM

I had a great time at Kings of Comedy, especially because the whole night felt well organised from start to finish. You’ll see professional television stars and major festival headliners alongside some of the best rising underground talent.

I attended a Saturday session recently, and the high-energy hosting kept everyone engaged. There weren’t any awkward silences either.

I also liked how carefully each performance was structured. The momentum stayed strong throughout the show

Having dinner in-house before heading into the main room was another nice touch.

The venue also handles group bookings well, so I’d consider it for a corporate event or birthday party.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the George Street location sits along one of the CBD’s busiest pedestrian corridors.

Pros

  • Features television and festival headliners
  • High-energy hosts maintain crowd engagement
  • In-house dinner options available before shows
  • Accommodates large group and corporate bookings

Cons

  • Located along a highly congested pedestrian corridor

Wonderful time

Had a wonderful time at this comedy club. We were a group of 18-year-olds with their mums. The comedians did a fantastic job keeping the laughs going, and the MC was superb at getting everyone in the mood. Highly recommend supporting these creative artists.

3. The Running Joke

the-running-joke

Website: https://www.therunningjoke.com.au/

Address: The Potts Point Hotel, 33-35 Darlinghurst Rd, Potts Point

Contact: [email protected]

Hours: Call for show availability

The Running Joke has a cosy feel that makes the comedy experience much more personal. It’s tucked away in a basement bar, so the intimate setting puts you close to the performers.

I also like the variety in its line-ups, which can include household names testing new material before television appearances.

A mate and I grabbed front-row seats last week, and the energy in that underground room was genuinely electric.

The resident host, Daniel Muggleton, was another highlight. He knows how to work the crowd and keep the laughs coming. He’s also opened for major international stars such as Bill Burr.

If you enjoy smaller venues where you feel connected to the performers, I think this place gets the atmosphere right.

The only real downside is that the hotel doesn’t have a dedicated parking lot for guests.

Pros

  • Intimate basement bar atmosphere
  • Resident host has international touring experience
  • Attracts famous comedians practicing new material
  • Extremely engaging and interactive environment

Cons

  • No dedicated parking lot for guests

4. Improv Comedy Cagefight

improv-comedy-cagefight

Website: https://www.improvcomedycagefight.com.au/

Address: The Chippo, 87-91 Abercrombie Street, Chippendale

Contact: Not available on website

Hours: Monday, 7:30 PM – 9:15 PM

I’d pick Improv Comedy Cagefight if you want something completely different from a traditional stand-up show. Every performance is unscripted and unpredictable, so the experience can change completely from one night to the next.

The audience gets involved by shouting out suggestions for the performers on stage. I also liked that you can sit comfortably in the front row without worrying about being targeted or picked on.

Two teams compete in a hilarious battle format, and the crowd votes for its favourite acts. The winning comedians then earn a second performance.

The whole thing feels like a mix of classic television improv formats and spontaneous on-stage antics. It’s a lot of fun if you enjoy interactive comedy.

Just keep in mind that the club has a highly restricted schedule early in the week.

Pros

  • Interactive shows directed by audience suggestions
  • Highly competitive battle format between teams
  • Front-row seating is completely safe from targeting
  • Features classic television improv games

Cons

  • Performance format strictly excludes traditional stand-up routines

Such a fun experience

Had such a fun experience with this event. My partner and I did the class plus the show, which was really fun. We got to meet a few locals and had a lot of laughs, and we even got to participate a bit during the show itself, which I wasn’t expecting. The teams were super funny, and all around it was an amazing memory for us!

Definitely worth a visit

These guys make improv look easy! Definitely worth a visit. I went while on holiday visiting my sister, and we won tickets to go back the following week! I wish I’d had time to check out the free class they offer, but every holiday has to end sometime.

Great atmosphere

Cosy little venue with a great atmosphere. The show was fantastic, and we had a really fun night. We’d love to come back for another show, and next time we’ll arrive a bit earlier to try the pizzas and enjoy a drink beforehand. Highly recommend for a fun night out!

The comedy was hilarious

This club feels like a secret speakeasy hidden behind the hustle and bustle of the Cross. Before the show, we enjoyed a drink chatting to locals in a bar furnished with comfy secondhand furniture. When the basement doors opened to the underground venue, the speakeasy vibes made us feel like we were in for a treat. The comedy was hilarious! I especially loved the plover-impersonating comedian. It was a great night out!
