5 Best Pottery Classes in New South Wales Worth Trying

Technique Guidance: I checked how well each studio guides students through fundamental shaping and decorating. Structured lessons help turn lumpy clay into sturdy, usable pieces.

Studio Environment: I paid close attention to class sizes, noise levels, and equipment quality. Calm, well-lit spaces make it much easier to concentrate on technique.

Material Inclusions: I checked what basic workshop fees actually cover, like clay supplies and kiln firings. That way, there are no surprise charges when you collect your finished work.

Hands-on Mentorship: I checked how attentively teachers offer feedback and live demonstrations. Knowledgeable mentors help students fix wobbly forms and gain real confidence.v

A few months ago, I tried to make a handmade ceramic mug for a friend. The disastrous, lopsided result proved that self-taught clay throwing is much harder than it looks online.

I desperately needed proper instruction, but enrolling in a formal art school felt far too intimidating for a casual weekend hobby.

That frustrating realisation inspired a deep dive into welcoming ceramic workshops instead. I contacted local studios, visited teaching spaces in person, and talked to local students to track down the best pottery class in New South Wales.

Below is my guide to patient instructors who make muddy hands fun.

How much does a pottery class cost in New South Wales?

In New South Wales (NSW), pottery classes typically cost between $50 AUD for casual single-session workshops and $560 AUD for multi-week comprehensive courses.

Hours: Monday-Thursday, 10:30 AM-6:00 PM; Friday, Closed; Saturday, 9:30 AM-5:00 PM; Sunday, Closed. By booked class or course.

Beginners hoping to build lasting ceramic skills can find a clear path forward at Soul Clay Studios. The studio offers introductory classes and guided studio practice for students with three sets of weekly classes or equivalent experience.

That guided setup pairs a two-and-a-half-hour taught lesson with three-and-a-half hours of independent weekly studio time.

Their seven-week courses dive into preparation, forming, trimming, and glazing, with both wheel-throwing and hand-building options.

I took my sister to their Friday night clay date last month, and we made surprisingly neat small bowls.

The studio hosts private corporate groups too.

Just remember that regular adult courses are for students aged 18 and over. Younger makers need to join the separately scheduled children’s options.

Pros

  • Guided practice includes independent studio time for suitably experienced students
  • Two-hour beginner experiences available
  • Seven-week courses cover forming through glazing
  • Wheel throwing and hand-building both taught

Cons

  • Regular adult courses restricted to ages 18 and up

Highly recommend the experience at Soul Clay Studios

I had a fabulous time at the two-day workshop run by Lisa Geue at Soul Clay Studios. Right from the start, Lisa was open, attentive, and helpful. We constructed and decorated two large coil pots with slip, and contributed to one very large pot Lisa was creating. The studio was clean, friendly, and well organised, with plenty of delicious food throughout the day. I had an enjoyable time with a very collegial group of fellow participants. Highly recommend the experience at Soul Clay Studios.

Delighted when our pottery was later posted to us

I went along to a Friday night event with my daughters, and we had such a great time. The staff were very kind and helpful, and the atmosphere was great. We were delighted when our pottery was later posted to us, a great reminder of a fun night, even if I did produce a particularly ‘interesting’ wonky pot after a glass or two of wine. If you’re visiting Gerringong, I’d highly recommend this activity.

2. ClayGround Studios Rosebery

Website: https://www.clayground.com.au/

Address: 601 Botany Rd, Rosebery

Contact: (02) 8328 0302 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM-5:00 PM; Saturday-Sunday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM. Pottery collection: Monday-Sunday, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM.

ClayGround Studios Rosebery is a solid pick if you want a pottery course that covers the whole process rather than just a single introductory session.

Their five-week wheel course takes you through throwing, trimming, and finishing. It also includes firing for five or six finished pieces.

Another thing I appreciate is that the course fee includes the necessary clay, tools, aprons, and glazes. You can also choose from one-off wheel tasters, ten-week terms, or dedicated hand-building courses.

The setup seems particularly friendly for beginners. I also like that there are membership options if you want to keep practising afterwards.

The main drawback is the weekly schedule. If you miss a session, it can’t be made up or rescheduled. So I’d make sure you can commit to the full course before booking.

Pros

  • Five-week course includes firing for five or six pieces
  • Low-commitment wheel taster classes available
  • Clay, tools, aprons, and glazes supplied for the specified course
  • Membership options for continued practice

Cons

  • Missed weekly course sessions cannot be made up or rescheduled

Definitely would recommend for beginners

First time doing pottery, and I attended the class with Elise for a matcha pot throwing session. Elise was great and super patient and helpful throughout the class. Definitely would recommend for beginners, and I’d love to come back again for another try.

Such a beautiful space and a beautiful community

We did a beginners class here across the weekend, and it was wonderful. The space is divine, the class was fantastic, and I made a pot (and another pot that ended up being a jug). We were also able to chat with some of the members and see their work in progress. Such a beautiful space and a beautiful community.

3. Print Paint Pot

Website: https://www.printpaintpot.com/

Address: Unit 4/53 Dickson Ave, Artarmon

Contact: 0431 687 009 | [email protected]

Hours: Monday, 8:00 AM-6:00 PM; Tuesday-Sunday, 8:00 AM-8:00 PM. Pottery collection is by appointment on Tuesday, 5:30 PM-6:30 PM, and Saturday, 12:00 PM-1:00 PM.

Print Paint Pot stands out to me if you want plenty of hands-on practice while learning pottery. Their four-week stoneware course provides unlimited practice clay and includes firing for up to six pots.

The course covers trimming, adding handles, glazing, and creative surface decoration. Tools and glazes are included too, so you don’t need to put together your own materials kit.

I also like that the course is suitable for beginners through to intermediate students.

Teenagers aged 12 and older can join alongside adults, which makes it a nice option for creative families. Couples can also book two-hour date-night wheel workshops that include one fired pot

The main catch is the extra cost for additional pieces. Keeping more than six pots from the course costs $15 AUD per piece to fire.

Pros

  • Unlimited practice clay in the four-week course
  • The four-week course accepts students aged 12 and older
  • Course tools and glazes included
  • Date-night wheel-throwing workshops available

Cons

  • Additional course pots cost $15 AUD each to fire
  • Pottery collection requires an appointment within limited pickup windows

One of the best date activities we’ve done

Had such a great time at Print Paint Pot on a date. The atmosphere was relaxed and fun, which made it easy to enjoy the experience, even as complete beginners. Our pottery coach, Elgan, was fantastic. He was patient, encouraging, and explained everything clearly without ever making us feel rushed. It ended up being one of the best date activities we’ve done. We’d definitely come back and would happily recommend it.

Address: 28 Yelta Street, The Ponds

Contact: 0414 565 106 | [email protected]

Hours: Contact hours, 8:00 AM-8:00 PM

Western Sydney locals wanting personal attention will enjoy the small-group setup at Muddy Madness. The studio runs a six-week course that combines wheel throwing and hand-building.

I like that you can learn both methods rather than having to choose just one.

Each session provides two focused hours of guidance. You’ll work on techniques such as slab rolling and coiling while also learning about glazing and underglazing. The small-group format gives you more opportunity to receive individual pointers.

I also spoke with a beginner student who praised how calmly the instructor demonstrated complex glazing techniques. That sounds particularly useful if you’re new to pottery.

One thing to keep in mind is the studio membership. Ongoing memberships are invitation-only and are reserved for students who complete a beginner course. Availability also applies.

Pros

  • Wheel throwing and hand-building combined in one course
  • Small-class format supports individual guidance
  • Glazing and underglazing instruction
  • Two-hour weekly sessions across six weeks

Cons

  • Ongoing studio membership is invitation-only and subject to availability

Pottery very quickly became my favourite part of the week

I’d been wanting to try pottery for a long time and am so glad I found this class! Pav is an amazing teacher and is very attentive to everyone. Pottery very quickly became my favourite part of the week, and I’d definitely recommend giving it a go.

5. Tennyson Studio

Website: https://tennysonstudio.com.au/

Address: 113A Tennyson Road, Tennyson Point

Contact: (02) 9879 0444 | [email protected]

Hours: Regular sessions: Tuesday-Thursday, 10:30 AM-3:00 PM; Wednesday evening, 6:45 PM-9:45 PM; Saturday, 10:30 AM-1:30 PM. Wednesday children’s art runs 4:30 PM-6:00 PM. Sunday party sessions require groups of at least 12.

Crafters who prefer sculptural building over high-speed spinning wheels will feel right at home at Tennyson Studio. Their six-week course focuses on hand-building alongside ceramic decoration and painting, with 18 instructional hours in total.

The first four weeks focus on making. The final two are dedicated to decorating and glazing. Each class includes 700 grams of clay as well as basic tools, specified glazes, and both firings.

You’ll learn techniques such as pinching, coiling, and sturdy slab construction. I also like that you get to experiment with colourful ceramic finishes.

The wider schedule includes kids’ painting sessions and group party packages too.

The main downside is the glaze selection. If you want speciality glazes outside those included in the course, you’ll need to pay an additional fee.

Pros

  • Dedicated 18-hour hand-building and decorating course
  • Defined clay allowance, tools, and both firings included
  • Instruction in slab building, pinching, and coiling
  • Separate painting classes for younger children

Cons

  • Speciality glazes incur an extra fee
  • Sunday party sessions require a group of at least 12

I had a fantastic experience with Tennyson Studio. From the moment I arrived, Ticky was warm, welcoming, and highly professional. The studio is beautifully presented, clean, and has a relaxed atmosphere that immediately puts you at ease. Ticky took the time to understand exactly what I wanted and helped me deliver results that exceeded my expectations. Nothing felt rushed, and the customer service was exceptional throughout.
