5 Best Driving Instructors in New South Wales to Get You Road-Ready
My parents taught me road safety through a steady diet of DUI lawyer horror stories. Unsurprisingly, I treated my first driving lesson like a court-avoidance programme!
The 120-hour logbook didn’t exactly calm my nerves. Thankfully, the best driving instructors in New South Wales can make intersections and parallel parking feel far less terrifying.
So I found patient instructors for teens, anxious adults, and overseas drivers. They’ll help you build safer habits, face the test confidently, and keep future legal drama firmly off the itinerary.
How much do driving instructors charge in New South Wales?
Driving instructors in New South Wales charge $60 to $95 for a standard one-hour driving lesson. This may cover an automatic or manual car.
A five-hour package costs $320 to $450. The lessons can count as 15 logbook hours.
A ten-hour package costs $600 to $880. This bundle can provide 30 recognised logbook hours.
A practical test package costs $200 to $250. It usually includes a warm-up lesson and test-day vehicle hire.
The Safer Drivers Course has a fixed fee of $140. Eligible learners receive 20 bonus logbook hours.
1. L Driving

Address: Constitution Rd, Ryde
Contact: 0477 111 444
Hours: Monday-Friday, 6:30 AM – 6:30 PM
Learning to drive around Ryde’s busy roads can feel like being dropped into the deep end with L plates. I like that L Driver Training School takes a calm, structured approach, especially for learners whose nerves arrive before the car does.
Its instructors prepare students for local traffic conditions and nearby testing areas without making every roundabout feel like a final exam.
Automatic lessons use modern dual-controlled Toyota Corollas, while door-to-door pickup is available across selected Sydney suburbs.
The school caters to beginners, test preparation, overseas licence holders, and drivers rebuilding their confidence. Its practical focus should suit anyone who wants patient coaching without unnecessary fuss.
The catch is that the school-provided Corollas are automatic. Manual learners can still book instruction, but they’ll need to supply their own suitable vehicle.

2. Learn Drive Survive Driving School

Address: 274 Macquarie Rd, Warners Bay
Contact: 1300 898 969
Hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM | Saturday, 9 AM – 2 PM | Sunday, 9 AM – noon
Road safety lessons tend to stick when they come from instructors who’ve seen what poor decisions can cause. I like that Learn Drive Survive’s team includes former police officers with extensive experience in driver training and road safety.
The school teaches low-risk driving alongside practical skills such as parking, hazard awareness, and test preparation.
Its automatic lessons use late-model, dual-controlled vehicles with five-star ANCAP safety ratings, which should settle a few passenger-seat nerves.
Lessons are structured around each learner’s ability, whether they’re complete beginners or preparing for the practical test.
That combination of calm coaching and real-world awareness makes the training feel useful beyond simply filling a logbook.
The drawback is that the school’s training fleet is automatic. Manual learners can book lessons, but they’ll need to provide their own suitable vehicle.

Patient, encouraging
Our son recently started driving lessons with Harni and we’re really happy with how it’s going so far. Harni has a very calm and friendly approach that immediately helped him feel comfortable and less nervous. He came home after his first lesson feeling much more confident and actually excited for the next one, which says a lot. It’s great to see an instructor who is patient, encouraging, and easy to get along with.

Brilliant instructor
Just terrific from start to finish. Super-responsive and professional on my many rescheduling requests and Simone, the instructor, was brilliant – really patient, very knowledgeable about the area and instructors, and the perfect blend of kindness and guidance. My daughter was anxious, as it has been a long time between getting all of her hours and taking the test, with little time to practice in between, but she passed on the first go, very much thanks to the LDS school. I’ve already recommended them to people and will continue to do so. Very happy customer.

3. Onroad Driving Education

Address: 3 Shortbridge Ave, Middleton Grange
Contact: 1300 667 623
Hours: Lesson hours: Monday–Friday, 6 AM–9 PM | Office hours: Daily, 9 AM–5:30 PM
Learning to drive should feel accessible, not like another obstacle course before reaching the road. That’s why I like that Onroad Driving Education is a registered NDIS provider.
It offers tailored lessons for people with different mobility and support needs. The team works with occupational therapy assessors to help drivers obtain, maintain, or regain their independence.
Automatic lessons are widely available, while manual instructors can be booked in selected areas.
Its First-Go Guarantee adds a reassuring little safety net if test-day nerves win. Eligible learners receive a free follow-up lesson after an unsuccessful first attempt, provided their instructor approves the guarantee beforehand.
The catch is that preferred instructors, manual vehicles, and lesson times depend on local availability.
Instructors may occasionally arrive up to 15 minutes early or late, so keep your phone nearby and your shoes on.

4. EzLicence

Address: 244 Macquarie St, Liverpool
Contact: Online form
Hours: 24-hour online booking
Calling several driving schools just to compare prices can feel like a road test before the actual road test. EzLicence puts independent Liverpool instructors, ratings, prices, transmission types, and live availability in one searchable place.
Learners choose their own instructor and can manage bookings online at any hour.
If the teaching chemistry stalls, switching to another instructor through the dashboard takes far less effort than an awkward breakup call.
Transparent pricing makes it easier to compare options before committing, while purchases of six or more lesson hours may unlock a discount.
The platform suits learners who value choice and would rather organise everything from the sofa.
The catch is that instructors set their own rates, so prices vary by suburb, transmission, and teacher. Switching instructors may mean paying a different hourly rate.
5. Newport Driving School

Address: 61 Kevin Ave, Avalon Beach
Contact: 0421 325 914
Hours: Monday–Saturday, 10 AM–7 PM
Learning around Avalon’s winding coastal roads calls for someone who knows every bend without making learners grip the wheel for dear life.
I like that Newport Beach Driving School brings a genuinely local touch through instructor Keisha Ferguson.
Keisha grew up around driver training and now runs her own Northern Beaches school alongside the family’s broader teaching tradition.
Her calm, step-by-step approach should suit nervous beginners, teens, and learners polishing their skills before test day.
Lessons take place in a modern automatic Chery Tiggo 4 with dual controls and a five-star ANCAP safety rating. Its driver-assistance features provide extra reassurance when a roundabout suddenly feels like advanced mathematics.
The main limitation is that Keisha offers automatic lessons only. Manual learners will need to contact another instructor, such as Jan at the related Newport Driving School.
