5 Best Violin Lessons in New South Wales for the Sweetest Notes

  • Instructor Qualifications: I chose qualified teachers with music degrees or solid performance experience. Good technique starts with someone who knows their strings.

  • Curriculum Variety: I looked for classical, contemporary, and exam-focused programmes. One tune shouldn’t have to fit every student.

  • Accessibility: I prioritised flexible schedules and locations near major transport links. Lessons shouldn’t require a logistical symphony.

  • Facility Quality: I favoured schools with tidy, well-maintained practice rooms and suitable acoustics. Even beginners deserve better than a noisy back room.

  • Reviews and Reputation: I checked recent student feedback for consistently positive experiences. Real reviews helped me separate polished promises from proven teaching.

I’ve survived years of rigorous piano lessons, and now I’m ready to swap keys for bows and strings. How hard can it be to make a violin sound less like an upset cat?

A patient teacher can sharpen technique, build good habits, and keep practice from becoming a daily battle. That matters whether you’re an adult beginner or choosing lessons for your child.

So, I explored local studios to find the best violin lessons in New South Wales that aspiring musicians can book. Here are my top picks for turning determined scraping into confident playing!

How much does a violin lesson cost in New South Wales?

Private violin lessons in New South Wales usually cost $60 to $100 per hour. The average rate is around $70 per hour.

Shorter 30-minute lessons typically cost $35 to $50. These sessions may suit children and beginners with shorter attention spans.

Mobile or in-home lessons cost around $66 for 45 minutes. A one-hour home session may cost roughly $83.

Specialised or advanced tutors charge $90 to $250 or more per hour. Rates vary according to the teacher’s experience, qualifications, and lesson format.

1. Shine Music School

Website

Address: 9/2 O’Connell Street, Parramatta

Contact: (02) 9687 9978

Hours: Monday–Friday: 10 AM–8:30 PM, Saturday: 8 AM–5 PM

After years of piano drills, I like that Shine Music School takes an equally structured approach to violin without draining the fun from it.

Its tertiary-educated teachers offer one-to-one lessons tailored to beginners, adults, and more experienced players.

New students work on note reading, rhythm, bowing, and other fundamentals before tackling trickier repertoire.

Classical, contemporary, jazz, and musical theatre options keep the programme from becoming a one-tune recital.

The soundproof, multimedia-equipped rooms also help students focus instead of competing with the pianist next door.

I’m equally impressed by the organised homework system and preparation available for AMEB and Trinity exams.

The Parramatta branch is closed on Sundays, though, which may inconvenience families with packed weekday and Saturday schedules.

Its central O’Connell Street location could also mean a slower trip during Parramatta’s busier periods.

Pros

  • Tertiary-educated violin teachers
  • Personalised one-to-one lessons
  • Beginner, adult, and advanced instruction
  • Classical, contemporary, jazz, and musical theatre options
  • AMEB and Trinity exam preparation
  • Soundproof, multimedia-equipped rooms
  • Structured homework and practice support

Cons

  • Parramatta branch is closed on Sundays
  • O’Connell Street traffic may slow peak-hour travel

The best place to cement the love of music into a child

My daughter Ela has been learning violin at Shine Music School for the past 4 years. I cannot speak highly enough of the guidance, support & nurturing she receives from all the staff & teachers. She absolutely loves playing… and it’s all thanks to William, Virginia, Jane & Janet.

2. Sydney Violin School

Address: Suite 203, 11-15 Deane Street, Burwood

Contact: 0481 846 546

Hours: Monday-Friday, 3:30 PM – 9 PM | Saturday-Sunday, 9 AM – 9 PM

Starting the violin can feel like wrestling four strings with a stick, so focused guidance matters. Good thing Sydney Violin School provides one-to-one lessons for complete beginners through to performance-grade players.

Its programme builds music literacy and proper technique while leaving room for creativity and enjoyment. Lessons run for 30 to 60 minutes weekly, and students can study violin, viola, cello, or piano.

I like that practice doesn’t stay trapped inside the classroom. Termly studio concerts, annual showcases, community performances, and chamber programmes give students plenty of reasons to polish their pieces.

The school is an approved external AMEB examination venue and offers a commitment-free introductory interview.

Its studio is only about a two-minute walk from Burwood Station, which makes the commute less of a performance.

However, Burwood is its only location. Students travelling from outside Sydney’s Inner West may find another school more convenient.

Pros

  • One-to-one lessons for beginners through to performance grades
  • Violin, viola, cello, and piano instruction
  • 30- to 60-minute weekly sessions
  • Termly concerts and annual showcases
  • Community and chamber music performances
  • Approved external AMEB examination venue
  • Commitment-free introductory interview
  • Two-minute walk from Burwood Station

Cons

  • Less convenient for students outside the Inner West

Appreciative

My son started his first violin lesson at 5 years old with Miss Michelle. We couldn’t be more grateful for Miss Michelle, who lead the little boy to the music path, helped him built strong foundation, The improvement of our son is not only in music playing but also the method of study. We are very appreciated of such a great pedagogue.

4. Gliss Music School

Website

Address: 102/2 Pembroke St, Epping

Contact: [email protected]

Hours: Monday-Friday, 2:30 PM – 7 PM | Saturday-Sunday, 8 AM – 6 PM

After years of travelling to piano lessons, I’m tempted by any teacher willing to bring the music room to me. Luckily, Gliss Music School sends mobile tutors to homes across Epping and surrounding northern Sydney suburbs.

Lessons can focus on leisure playing, AMEB preparation, ensemble skills, technique, or performance confidence. That flexibility suits students who want progress without being marched through the same musical score.

I like that some tutors provide detailed written homework reports to guide practice between sessions.

The online enquiry process is straightforward, and a 45-minute introductory lesson lets students test the fit before committing.

Its lesson hours stretch across weekdays and weekends, making the service practical for busy households. You’ll still need to confirm that a suitable tutor travels to your particular suburb, though.

Also, cancellations made two hours or less before a lesson incur the full fee. That’s a costly sting if plans unravel at the last minute.

Pros

  • Mobile tutors teach in students’ homes
  • Serves Epping and surrounding northern Sydney suburbs
  • Lessons for leisure, AMEB exams, and ensemble skills
  • Technique and performance-confidence support
  • Some tutors provide written homework reports
  • Introductory 45-minute lesson available
  • Weekday and weekend lesson hours

Cons

  • Tutor availability depends on the student’s suburb
  • Cancellations made two hours or less before a lesson incur the full fee

5. Inner West Institute of Music

inner-west-institute-of-music

Website

Address: Suite 2, 84 Great North Rd, Five Dock

Contact: 0413 002 757

Hours: Monday-Friday, 3 PM – 9 PM | Saturday, 8 AM – 8 PM | Sunday, 8 AM – noon

After enough piano drills to last a lifetime, I know every musician learns at a different tempo. Inner West Institute of Music tailors violin lessons to each student’s age, ability, goals, and musical interests.

Beginners start with posture, bow hold, tone, rhythm, and simple music reading. More experienced players can refine their intonation or prepare for AMEB exams, auditions, performances, and scholarships.

I like having a choice between 30- and 60-minute sessions, especially when bowing stamina is still a work in progress.

Seven-day availability gives busy families and adults more room to find a suitable slot.

The experienced teachers work with children, teenagers, and adults at studios in Five Dock and Balmain. Their structured but encouraging approach keeps technique important without making every lesson feel like an exam.

The downside is that the Five Dock studio relies on nearby on-street parking. Spaces may be less predictable during busier periods.

Pros

  • Tailored lessons for different ages, abilities, and goals
  • Beginner to advanced violin instruction
  • AMEB exam, audition, and performance preparation
  • Choice of 30- or 60-minute sessions
  • Lessons available seven days a week
  • Experienced teachers for children, teenagers, and adults
  • Studios in Five Dock and Balmain
  • Structured yet encouraging teaching style

Cons

  • Parking availability may vary during busy periods

Enjoyable lessons

My child takes violin lessons with IWIM and also plays in the ensemble they run at her school. Very happy with both, her progress with the lessons has been amazing and the lessons enjoyable, and she really loves the ensemble. Without the ensemble she would be less interested in playing violin; she really enjoys playing with other children, and it really motivates her to play more. In fact, playing with the ensemble is her favourite thing about the violin!

Strongly recommend

It has been three years we have been with IWIM, and we really enjoyed violin lessons with Ms Victoria. She is very calm and dedicated to the work with young students. I have recommended her to any friends who came to me to ask for a great place to learn. And now I want to recommend anyone who reads this comment to come to IWIM. I’m not sure if Ms Victoria is capable of taking in any new students by now, but other lovely teachers are also strongly recommended.
