5 Best Guitar Lessons in New South Wales to Get You Strumming

Proximity: I chose accessible studios and travelling tutors across metro and regional NSW. Less commuting means more time for strumming.

Teaching Quality: I checked each instructor’s experience and teaching style. The best can explain tricky techniques without tying beginners in knots.

Lesson Variety: I looked for acoustic, electric, classical, and bass guitar lessons across several genres. Musical tastes change, so lessons shouldn’t stay stuck on one note.

Studio Standards: I considered soundproofing, seating, lighting, and equipment quality. A comfortable studio makes missed chords feel slightly less dramatic.

Reputation: I reviewed local feedback for patience, reliability, and communication. Consistent praise mattered more than flashy promises.

I’ve been thinking about piano lessons, but there’s one tiny hitch: I don’t own a piano.

A guitar feels much easier to welcome home, and far less likely to demand its own corner. The best guitar lesson in New South Wales should make my practice feel exciting, not like weekly homework.

Whether you fancy gentle acoustic strumming or glorious rock-star riffs, there’s a class to match. Let’s look at some of the best ones.

How much does a guitar lesson cost in New South Wales?

Guitar lessons in New South Wales generally cost A$30 to A$80 per session. Rates depend on the lesson length, location, class size, and teacher’s experience.

A 30-minute private lesson costs around A$40 to A$45. This shorter format suits young children and beginners developing basic hand strength.

A 60-minute private lesson ranges from A$30 to A$80. It gives adults and more experienced players enough time for technique, theory, and song practice.

Group lessons cost about A$20 to A$35 per student. They’re commonly offered through primary schools and music academies.

Studios may offer pay-as-you-go sessions or blocks lasting five to ten weeks. Some providers accept eligible NSW Creative Kids vouchers, but availability and current voucher rules should be confirmed before booking.

1. Forte Music

Website

Address: Suite 27 / 888 Pittwater Road (Level 1), Dee Why

Contact: 02 9981 2677

Hours: Reception: Monday-Friday, 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM | Saturday, 9 AM – noon

Picking up a guitar can feel like asking your fingers to solve a puzzle at full volume. Forte School of Music Dee Why makes the process friendlier with private lessons for children, teenagers, and adults.

Students can learn acoustic, electric, or bass guitar, with teachers tailoring sessions to their preferred music and goals. Standard lessons run for 30 minutes, which feels manageable for beginners without leaving their hands completely frazzled.

I particularly like that younger children aren’t rushed straight into guitar technique before they’re ready. Forte recommends its foundational music courses for ages three-and-a-half to seven, with many students moving to guitar at eight or nine.

The main drawback is reach, as Dee Why is Forte’s only NSW location and may be inconvenient outside the Northern Beaches.

Saturday reception closes at noon too, so weekend enquiries need a little forward planning.

Pros

  • Private guitar lessons for children, teenagers, and adults
  • Covers acoustic, electric, and bass guitar
  • Lessons tailored to students’ musical interests and goals
  • Foundational music courses available for younger children
  • Manageable 30-minute standard lesson format

Cons

  • Only one NSW location, based in Dee Why (may be inconvenient for students outside the Northern Beaches)
  • Saturday reception closes at noon

Highly recommend

I currently attend Forte School of Music for adult guitar lessons with Cameron. Cameron has excellent teaching abilities, and in a very short period he has really helped me gain more confidence with my guitar skills. His great musical talent has helped me progress with my technical skills, music theory, ear training and repertoire. I highly recommend lessons with Cameron!

2. Ultimate Guitar Academy

Website

Address: 1B/1 Exchange Pde, Smeaton Grange

Contact: 0439 716 734

Hours: Monday-Friday, 2 PM – 9 PM | Saturday, 9 AM – 4 PM

Starting guitar can make ten fingers feel like ten complete strangers. Ultimate Guitar Academy eases beginners in with its own step-by-step curriculum, helping students build technique without leaping straight into fretboard chaos.

Lessons are available privately or in groups at the Smeaton Grange studio, with online tuition offered for home learners. Students get digital learning resources and jam sessions where they can practise songs alongside fellow guitarists.

I particularly like the free guitar loan for the first five weeks of enrollment. It lets beginners test their commitment before buying an instrument that might otherwise become very expensive wall décor.

However, the studio operates by appointment only, so spontaneous visits aren’t an option. Free guitar hire ends after five weeks too, after which rental costs A$25 per month.

Pros

  • Step-by-step curriculum for beginners
  • Private, group, and online lesson options
  • Access to digital learning resources
  • Student jam sessions available
  • Free guitar loan for the first five weeks

Cons

  • Studio visits are by appointment only
  • Free guitar hire is limited to enrolled students
  • Guitar rental costs A$25 per month after five weeks

Great experience

My son has just started taking guitar lessons with Daniel (@ UGA) from the start of this year, and he absolutely enjoys it. We are kept well informed of what he is learning via Google Docs, and there is access to videos to assist him with practising at home. Since he’s in a program where the classes are at school, he has the option to gain confidence to play in front of an audience from the very start and with a group he’s comfortable with. It’s been a great experience so far.

Friendly teachers, good pace

My son has only just started guitar lessons but always looks forward to them. His teacher is friendly and makes him feel comfortable learning at his pace. It’s great that it is incorporated into the school day. Also, the follow-up emails and communication are excellent.

Address: 282 Victoria Rd, Gladesville

Contact: 0409 663 238

Hours: Monday-Friday, 10 AM – 9 PM | Saturday, 8 AM – 5:30 PM

My guitar ambitions currently run well ahead of my finger coordination, so adaptable teaching gets my attention. Guitar Factory School welcomes all ages and skill levels, from first-time strummers to experienced players chasing trickier techniques.

Its Gladesville roster brings together conservatorium-trained musicians and seasoned performers across rock, pop, jazz, metal, fingerstyle, and classical guitar. Selected teachers can prepare students for AMEB exams or HSC music assessments too.

Lessons can be arranged in four-, five-, or ten-week blocks, while newcomers may pay for their first session separately. I like that tuition can follow individual interests rather than forcing every guitarist through the same musical obstacle course.

Do note that individual tutors teach on set days, so securing your preferred mentor may require some timetable juggling.

The Gladesville studio may also be less convenient for students travelling from farther parts of NSW.

Pros

  • Welcomes students of all ages and skill levels
  • Conservatorium-trained and highly experienced tutors
  • Covers rock, pop, jazz, metal, fingerstyle, and classical guitar
  • Selected teachers offer AMEB and HSC preparation
  • Four-, five-, and ten-week lesson blocks available
  • Lessons can be tailored to individual musical interests

Cons

  • Individual tutors are available only on selected days/preferred teachers may require some timetable juggling
  • Gladesville location may be inconvenient for students farther across NSW

10/10

I have been attending classes with Hamish for a few months now. I have found them very helpful. Hamish has a way of breaking down techniques and explaining aspects of the fretboard in a way that was easy for me to understand. He helped me have several lightbulb moments regarding scales and solos that I would quite simply never have been able to figure out myself. He has reinvigorated my passion for playing guitar. I highly recommend Hamish to anybody considering guitar lessons, beginner or advanced. 10/10.

Highly recommend

Absolutely outstanding experience! Have played for 10 years but was starting to lose my passion for the guitar. Hamish has given me both a strong theoretical base and the ability to develop my own voice on the guitar. Highly recommend signing up and getting some lessons.

Address: Office 2A, 12 O’Sullivan Road, Leumeah Shopping Centre, Leumeah

Contact: 0422 995 647

Hours: Monday–Thursday, 9 AM–8 PM | Friday, 9 AM–4 PM | Saturday, 9 AM–5 PM

Adult beginners don’t always want rigid terms or a contract with more strings than their guitar. Campbelltown Guitar Lessons keeps things flexible with weekly, pay-as-you-go private tuition.

Each 30-minute lesson costs A$45, with no enrolment, administration, or exit fees. That gives hesitant learners room to try guitar without making an expensive long-term commitment.

The programme focuses on practical skills such as timing, chord changes, improvisation, and playing with others.

I like that it can support casual strummers alongside students preparing for auditions, jam sessions, or open-mic nights.

Plus, online tuition is available when travelling to the Leumeah studio isn’t convenient.

However, the studio is also closed on Sundays, so weekend learners are limited to Saturday appointments.

Pros

  • Zero upfront enrolment or admin fees
  • Free door-front shopping centre parking
  • Relaxed pay-as-you-go pricing model
  • Tailored training for adult hobbyists

Cons

  • Studio is closed on Sundays

Amazing teacher

Bob is an amazing teacher! My 12yr old son has been learning from Bob for 3yrs and he has come such a long way since we first started.

Bob has not only taught him how to play the guitar over the years, but has also taught him how to read music. He is teaching the basics and creating a very stable music foundation.

Thank you for everything, Bob. Jacob loves coming to class, and he looks forward to learning new things every week.

Highly recommend

Bob has been both an inspiring and professional guitar tutor for my brother and me. Under his tuition, we have been able to make an incredible amount of progress in a short amount of time. His skills and experiences in multiple disciplines facilitate an enjoyable and effective learning environment. Guitar lessons have become a highlight of our week, and I would highly recommend it to any aspiring musicians. Thank you, Bob!

5. Guitar for All

Address: 82 Blues Point Rd, McMahons Point

Contact: +61 401 626 298

Hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 6:30 PM

Getting children to lessons can feel like organising a small touring band, minus the roadies. Guitar for All makes life easier by sending qualified tutors to homes across Sydney’s North Shore, Northern Beaches, and Inner West.

Students can learn acoustic, classical, electric, or bass guitar at beginner through advanced levels. Younger players may tackle familiar pop and rock songs, which should make practice feel less like another homework assignment.

I like that lessons can follow each student’s interests, ability, and musical goals. Guitar for All has even developed method books covering chords, scales, riffs, melodies, and popular songs for younger learners.

The main drawback is the school-term commitment, as families are billed for at least nine lessons and payments are generally non-refundable.

Only one make-up lesson is allowed per ten-lesson term, so busy households will need to guard that weekly slot carefully.

Pros

  • Tutors travel directly to students’ homes
  • Covers the North Shore, Northern Beaches, and Inner West
  • Acoustic, classical, electric, and bass guitar lessons
  • Suitable for beginner through advanced players
  • Lessons tailored to individual interests and goals
  • Original method books available for younger learners

Cons

  • Minimum booking of nine lessons per school term
  • Payments are generally non-refundable and non-transferable
  • Only one make-up lesson per ten-lesson term
  • Address or availability changes may result in forfeited lessons

Accommodating

My son started guitar lessons with no prior experience and, under Roger’s guidance, was able to learn notes/scales and songs confidently. I find the pace very good to accommodate the way my son learns, and he is really enjoying the weekly classes during the terms. The classes being located at school is also so convenient and safe. Matthew is also so responsive on email and text. Thank you to the team at Guitar for All- Max has had a great time learning guitar!

Fantastic teacher

My son has been having guitar lessons with Guitar for All for several years now. We’ve had excellent tutors for both acoustic and electric, and the coordination and communication around lessons by Matthew is great. Our current tutor, Roger, is a fantastic teacher.
