Finding a gym that covers every combat discipline under one roof can be tough.
Luckily, United Kempo Martial Arts Academy combines Karate, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Mixed Martial Arts MMA, Boxing, and Fitness Kickboxing into one complete schedule.
Their programs span all age groups, starting with toddlers at 18 months up to adult training.
I dropped by during an evening session, and the supportive atmosphere stood out immediately. The coaches pair practical self-defence with intense cardio conditioning to build true resilience.
Families can take advantage of non-contact fitness options and martial arts birthday party packages. Plus, their 21-day unlimited trial for $59 makes testing out classes simple and affordable.
However, it’s worth noting that the adult martial arts classes push a demanding pace that might feel intense for casual hobbyists.
They welcome all experience levels
Would highly recommend this gym. I have been training here for over 10 years since primary school into early adulthood. Great martial arts gym, teachers are knowledgeable, experienced in various styles and they welcome all experience levels. Never had any issues with the owners or other people in the gym throughout my time here.

Actually do challenge you to push your limits and improve your skills
I signed up back in 2022 and have been attending Boxing and Muay Thai classes. I was definitely impressed by these guys on my first day (compared to my previous experiences) this is not some generic version of martial arts classes, they actually do challenge you to push your limits and improve your skills. This is a family friendly environment, the instructor’s and students here are welcoming and encouraging. If you’re serious about taking self-defence classes, I highly recommend United Kempo Martial Arts Academy.

2. Open Sparring Muay Thai Sydney & BJJ Sydney

Website: https://opensparring.com/
Address: 27 PARK ST
Contact: 0425 33 7213
Hours: Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM
Training in pure striking and ground grappling requires dedicated coaching and quality gear. Open Sparring Muay Thai Sydney & BJJ Sydney focuses on traditional fundamentals paired with modern competition techniques.
Their team structures every session to welcome newcomers while guiding serious combat athletes toward local and national tournaments.
The facility provides 130 square metres of padded mat space, heavy Thai bags, air conditioning, and a dedicated recovery zone.
But it’s worth mentioning that they focus heavily on Muay Thai, BJJ, and MMA, so you won’t find traditional Karate or Taekwondo forms here.
On top of that, some have experienced occasional discrepancies in operating hours, which can make planning training tricky.
Definitely the best martial arts gym I’ve been to yet
I came here a complete beginner about half a year ago, but the amount of progress I made in such a short period of time was genuinely amazing. The atmosphere and training sessions you find here are so great and I am forever grateful for the amazing trainers that have trained me Jordan and Louis. This is definitely the best martial arts gym I’ve been to yet.

3. Family Self Defence

Website: https://www.familyselfdefence.com.au/
Address: 55/4 Hoyle Ave. Castle Hill NSW 2154
Contact: 02 9894 1106
Hours: Monday-Friday, 3:00 PM – 8:30 PM | Saturday, 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Stepping onto the mats without any prior combat background can feel intimidating for new practitioners. Family Self Defence solves this problem by specialising in beginner-friendly classes across Castle Hill and Parramatta.
Their curriculum combines Karate strikes with Judo grappling to give students practical protection skills.
Children can build focus starting from age three, while teens can advance to strategic sparring. New members also receive a free trial class and a free training uniform upon enrollment.
However, the instruction focuses heavily on foundational movements, which can feel repetitive for experienced practitioners. On top of that, the higher overall membership costs may seem steep for those wanting diverse, advanced drills.
We’ve seen a huge boost in both his skills and confidence
Since my son started attending this martial arts class, we’ve seen a huge boost in both his skills and confidence. The instructors are supportive and skilled, creating a great balance of discipline and fun. He looks forward to every session and it’s been amazing watching him grow stronger and more focused. We are so proud of what he’s achieving. Big thanks to Miss Marga, Mr Evan and the team.

4. Australian Martial Arts Academy

Website: http://www.australianmartialarts.com.au/
Address: Studio 35/142 Addison road Marrickville, NSW 2204
Contact: 9569 1943
Hours: Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 8:30 PM | Saturday-Sunday, 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Operating since 1982, Australian Martial Arts Academy brings over four decades of teaching experience to Marrickville. The academy is led by Grandmaster Ridvan Manav, the founder and a 9th Dan black belt who trains an elite coaching team.
They run over 120 classes each week following a structured 52-week curriculum. Programs start from 18 months and include dedicated family classes where parents train alongside kids.
I spoke with a local parent after an afternoon session, and she praised the flexible attendance rules. Members can easily reschedule sessions or make up missed classes throughout the month.
But peak classes can feel crowded, and the 30-minute toddler sessions offer limited floor time for active movement.
Has learned a lot from his martial arts journey
My son has been attending AMAA since he was in Kindy and now he’s in year 6, he’s still very much enjoying it. He has learned a lot from his martial arts journey and the coaches have always been very helpful, kind, and supportive.

5. Pinnacle Taekwondo Martial Arts in Marrickville

Website: https://pinnaclemartialarts.com.au/
Address: 23 Yabsley Avenue, Marrickville NSW, 2204
Contact: 0410 686 585
Hours: Monday-Sunday, 8:00 AM – 9:00 PM
Combining traditional Taekwondo with Korean Karate, Kung Fu, Boxing, and practical self-defence, Pinnacle Taekwondo Martial Arts delivers a broad combat education.
Head instructor Grand Master Dr Hassan Iskandar, a 9th Dan Kukkiwon-certified master with over 50 years of experience, leads every training track. The academy also places six to eight instructors on the floor during sessions to maximise individual attention.
Students can start in the Mini Rangers program at age three and advance toward competitive Olympic-style Taekwondo. Families can also book a free introductory class before committing to regular weekly sessions.
But the mixed curriculum may not suit practitioners seeking pure, single-style Taekwondo training. Plus, their high-performance athlete track feels very rigorous for casual fitness seekers.
Genuinely care about helping every child succeed
We couldn’t be happier with our experience at Pinnacle Taekwondo and Martial Arts in Marrickville. The trainers are incredibly experienced, motivating, and genuinely care about helping every child succeed. Since joining, our boys have grown so much in confidence, discipline, and skill. They absolutely love going to every class! We highly recommend Pinnacle to anyone looking for a supportive martial arts school that helps children build confidence, respect, and lifelong skills.
