Helping my nephew with his schoolwork quickly becomes a bigger task than I expected. He’s bright and curious, but certain subjects start to frustrate him, and I can see his confidence dip whenever homework turns into a struggle.

That’s when I started looking into tutoring services. The goal isn’t just better grades, but finding someone who knows how to explain things clearly, keep him engaged, and help him enjoy the learning process.

Living in Sydney means there are plenty of options, but not all of them feel right. After researching, asking around, and focusing on services that genuinely support students, we put together this list of the best tutoring services in Sydney.

How much do tutoring services cost in Sydney?

In Sydney, private tutoring fees can vary depending on the tutor’s experience, subject, and whether lessons are online or in person. You’ll typically pay around $40-120 per hour for one-to-one tuition.

For families who’ve tried tutoring before and felt it just didn’t click, One-To-One Tutor comes across our radar as a refreshing reset. Looking into how their sessions run, it’s clear their focus goes beyond helping students catch up at school.

It’s because they emphasize building a better understanding, piquing curiosity, and guiding learners stay consistent throughout the term.

This approach is supported by how carefully students are matched with qualified tutors who understand both the NSW curriculum and each student’s age and learning style.

You also don’t have to worry about bringing your children to them, since you can choose between online and in-home tutoring.

For on-site, they have small group classes of just two to three students, all within a safe and supportive environment. That said, these are limited, so you’ll have to inquire ahead of the school year to secure a slot.

The weekly lesson notes are also a nice touch to their program. Parents shared that it made it easier for them to stay involved in their child’s learning journey.

Aside from academics, we’re quite fond of their Friday Chess Club. This gives students a chance to build strategic thinking skills and gain new hobbies.

Pros

  • Highly personalised approach
  • Wide subject coverage
  • Qualified and experienced tutors
  • Flexible lesson format
  • Weekly progress notes for parents
  • Supportive learning environment

Cons

  • Limited small group session

The team is helpful and super friendly

“I have been using Tim services for over 18 months both at home and now at his onsite premises. One-To-One was recommended by a friend. Tim has always returned communication with any questions I have had. The team is helpful and super friendly. My son comes away from each session feeling more confident and enjoying the school work .  My son is feeling the benefit of his tutoring on-site at Riverstone. Would recommend One-To-One Tutoring services.”

I feel good that she is getting the extra support she needs

We have started tutoring for my 7 year old this term for both math, reading and writing. She enjoys every lesson and really likes her tutor Emma. I can already see progress in her catching up at school and feel good that she is getting the extra support she needs. One-To-One have also been very flexible and accommodating with scheduling and very friendly.

Following our list is Tutoring Services Sydney, which caught our attention because of the range of students and subjects they cater to, from early primary all the way to university-level work.

Their tutors are highly specialised as they include essay writing, thesis support, and exam preparation into their course.

Sessions can also be done either in-home or online, and everything is aligned with the NSW curriculum and the student’s individual learning style.

What especially hooked us was their support for learners beyond regular lessons. They help students manage stress and nerves, which is important to improve school performance.

Once they’re in the classroom, they tend to stick to small groups as well, so they can focus on core subjects like English, Maths, and Science. They’ll even cover everything from advanced calculus to organic chemistry when needed.

However, while they do work with younger children, their focus leans more toward upper-year subjects and advanced learning.

Pros

  • Covers core and advanced courses
  • Online and in-home sessions available
  • Lessons follow the NSW curriculum
  • Offers exam preparation
  • Provides stress support

Cons

  • Focuses more on advanced subjects for upper years

He helped me a lot throughout the year

I had Mr Rodrigo Roman for Year 12 Physics, and he is an amazing tutor. He helped me a lot throughout the year and always explained concepts clearly. He also responds quickly if I ever have questions outside of lessons. I never had any issues and highly recommend him to anyone looking for a great tutor.

Her confidence and results improved dramatically

Patient, knowledgeable, encouraging, enthusiastic and kind.  I rang Rodrigo very last minute one Sunday needing help for my daughter to complete a chemistry assessment for which the deadline was looming. My daughter was struggling and extremely anxious.  Even though we were strangers, Rodrigo went out of his way to find a time to help my daughter and she achieved a fantastic result.  My daughter then started weekly sessions with Rodrigo and her confidence and results improved dramatically.  My daughter received an offer to study medicine at Western Sydney Uni.  I know that Rodrigo’s encouragement and assistance helped her get there.  My only little regret is that we didn’t start the tutoring earlier.

Coming from over 10 years of practice and research, Art of Smart Education is designed to lessen the stress of schoolwork. This is through their holistic tutoring approach, meaning that academics, well-being, and study habits are treated equally.

Tutoring options are known to be flexible as families can choose 1-on-1, small group programs, or a mix of both, especially for Years 11 and 12. Students can also learn online or face-to-face, and you can even study at one of their Sydney campuses!

Another reassuring thing for parents is the quality of tutors here. Instructors include high ATAR achievers, while many are pre-service teachers and post-graduate students.

Not only that, the centre has a bunch of free content and resources. This includes HSC guides, study tips, and workshops.

But it’s worth noting that their approach is quite fixed and can feel rigid for some families. It’s best suited for students who are ready to stick to routines rather than for quick, short-term homework help.

Pros

  • Strong focus on confidence and wellbeing
  • Flexible 1-on-1 and small group options
  • High-quality, carefully selected tutors
  • Online and face-to-face availability
  • Research-backed tutoring methods

Cons

  • Might be too rigid

My English grade significantly improved

“Art of Smart is probably one of the best tutoring resources out there. Definitely recommend for senior students who need a bit of a push with subjects they’re struggling in. Huge shoutout to Chelsea for being such an incredible tutor and getting me through year 12 for English Advanced and Legal Studies. After starting sessions with her, my English grade significantly improved from the 50% I was averaging and I topped legal number 1 in trials!! Couldn’t have done it without her help or without the AoS resources!”

The atmosphere is very motivating

“My son has been attending for 4-5months and has made great progress. He is really enjoying it. The atmosphere is very motivating, and Stefan has been an incredible, inspiring tutor for him. I highly recommend Art of Smart Education, and it really helps that Stefan has such a caring nature supporting my son along the way.”

Alchemy Tuition always gets a nod from busy parents as it’s built to fit smoothly into family life. Everything from booking to payments is set up as stress-free as possible.

Tutors can even come to your home or meet your child online, so there’s no rushing through traffic after school or juggling extra schedules.

Their services go well beyond core subjects, too. Alchemy supports students with NAPLAN and selective school and senior exam prep (HSC, VCE, QCE, IB).

And after each lesson, families get regular updates, feedback, and a detailed progress report every 10 sessions, so you always know your child’s progress.

What impressed us most, though, is their focus on trust and safety, especially in choosing their pool of tutors. Every tutor goes through a triple safety check, including interviews, reference checks, and Working with Children requirements.

Parents often mention that these mentors in Alchemy are their children’s role models who helped build their children’s confidence and motivations, especially in improving marks.

But because of their popularity, they’re usually in high demand. Booking earlier helps ensure you’re matched with the best possible fit for your child.

Pros

  • In-home and online tutoring options
  • Easy booking with no contracts
  • Progress tracking and reporting
  • Carefully vetted, safety-checked tutors

Cons

  • Limited availability

The process of booking to find a tutor is great

“We have started with Alchemy Tuition for term 3 and have found it great. The process of booking to find a tutor is great with the questions asked about our daughter so she can be with a tutor who is great for her. The process is also so quick which was amazing. Our tutor has been great and understanding when things have come up. She is someone our daughter is comfortable with and is invested in helping her excel and achieve in her getting better at her maths”

The communication was easy and efficient

“We were quite nervous about getting tutor in the two months before the selective test, but we were pleasantly surprised by Alchemy. The communication was easy and efficient. Our tutor was wonderful, patient and supportive but also challenging. Would recommend without hesitation.”

Successful Learners Tutoring Sydney stands out for its structure and quality-driven approach. That focus shows clearly in how their programs are organised and delivered.

One thing most parents notice quickly is the age range they cover. They support students from preschool all the way through to high school.

For those ages 4-5, they have the School Readiness Program, which is designed to build confidence, early literacy, and numeracy! It’s meant to help kids feel comfortable before they step into kindergarten.

A nice additional service you don’t often see elsewhere is the free Homework Centre for enrolled students. It gives kids a set time each week to get work done with support, a win for parents with busy schedules.

They even supplement this with clear, structured learning resources. These make it easier for students to practise independently and stay organised between sessions.

But despite the strong programs and support, it’s a bit frustrating that pricing isn’t readily available.

Pros

  • Accepts students in any age bracket
  • Strong school readiness and primary programs
  • Free Homework Centre for enrolled students
  • Practical learning materials

Cons

  • Pricing not readily available
