The 5 Best Orthopaedic Specialists in Perth to Help Restore Your Mobility

Qualifications and Credentials: We verified that each specialist held relevant medical degrees and was fully accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, which ensures they meet Australia’s rigorous professional standards. Subspecialty Expertise: We included providers who had fellowship training or significant experience in a specific area of need, such as joint replacement or sports injuries. Patient Care and Approach: We focused on clinics known for being respectful and attentive, making sure clients feel comfortable throughout their care. Patient Reviews: We analysed patient testimonials to assess recovery rates, complication frequencies, and overall patient experiences.

A few months ago, my uncle managed to injure his knee in style while showing off his “legendary” cricket bowling at a family picnic.

Suddenly, the man who only ever complained about missing his coffee was now groaning about every flight of stairs. It became obvious pretty quickly that this wasn’t something he could just shake off; he needed a professional.

So began our quest. We sorted through reviews, confusing medical terms, and big promises, which wasn’t easy, but we did find some genuinely excellent options.

My uncle eventually got the care he needed and is now back to offering unwanted commentary on backyard sports.

Along the way, I collected more useful info than one family could ever need. So if joint pain has been running the show, or knee braces are starting to feel like a permanent accessory, here’s my curated list of the best orthopaedic specialists in Perth.

How much do orthopaedic specialists charge in Perth?

Orthopaedic specialist consultations in Perth usually cost about $200–$350 for an initial visit and $100–$180 for follow-ups (before Medicare rebates).

Surgery costs vary widely depending on the procedure and whether you have private insurance.

Reputation was always my starting point when choosing a clinic, and Perth Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Centre certainly lives up to its good name.

Their team covers pretty much every joint you can think of, from hips and knees to shoulders, hands, and even complex trauma.

But the real strength is how the team works together. Sports physicians and physiotherapists coordinate your care, so you don’t have to shuffle between different clinics.

Since the team is all together, that also means most imaging, like X-rays and MRIs, is done onsite. Even extras like custom bracing and orthotics are handled right there, making recovery smoother and simpler.

I was also impressed by their approach to treatment. Surgery is never the knee-jerk reaction; non-surgical options are considered before anything.

One patient told me how grateful she was to receive a careful rehab plan for her tendon injury, rather than being pushed straight to an operation, unlike the last clinic she visited.

However, a couple of people did mention their appointments felt a bit rushed during busy periods, so that’s something to keep in mind.

Pros

  • Strong reputation
  • Comprehensive joint care
  • Coordinated treatment
  • Most imaging is done onsite
  • Focuses on non-surgical options
  • Personalised rehab plans

Cons

  • Appointments may feel rushed during busy times

A brilliant surgeon with a great bedside manner

“Had my gluteal tear repair by Dr Janes in March..I still have 3 months out of 12 for recovery but it’s so great to be able to walk without pain in my right leg. Now I need a total Knee Replacement 🤣🤣🤣 booked in for Septemeber Yes Dr Janes is doing that for him. He is a brilliant surgeon and had a great bedside manner and also a sense of humour Big shout out to Suzie his brilliant personal assistant who kept me in the loop and nothing was a problem for her”

I’m happy with the result of my ligaments and tendons repair

“Dr Janes repaired ligaments and tendons in my left shoulder and was happy with the result. I am now going to see him again for the right shoulder and after a couple of months after he operated on my left shoulder I had 5 visits for physio under a care plan from my GP she gave me an apparatus to use at home and after the five visits I had two twice in a week towards the end because she done job. When I went to see Greg for the last visit he was happy with the results but I asked him if I could have a cortisone injection which he kindly did I had to pay for it with no Medicare rebate but I didn’t worry about the cost as it helped ease the little niggle I had a few days before seeing him I probably over done something”

Dr Clark is the kind of orthopaedic surgeon you’d feel comfortable trusting with both routine issues and more complex cases. His main focus is hip and knee replacements, plus revision operations, trauma, and soft tissue surgery.

But what really caught my attention is how broad his skill set is. He also performs ACL reconstructions and patella stabilisation, so he’s not only about replacements; he treats sports injuries and joint instability as well.

Beyond the usual orthopaedic work, Dr Clark is involved in rare orthopaedic oncology surgery, treating benign and malignant bone as part of a multidisciplinary team.

When it comes to precision, he leans on advanced techniques like robot-assisted surgery and virtual pre-operative planning, especially for hip and knee replacements.

A few patients I spoke to said that seeing the surgical plan laid out visually before the operation made them feel more confident, and it helped their families understand what to expect.

But with his expertise, he’s usually in high demand, so appointments have to be booked several weeks in advance. A GP referral is also required before booking, which is worth organising early if you want to avoid delays.

Pros

  • Trusted for routine and complex cases
  • Specialises in hip and knee replacements
  • Treats ACL and patella injuries
  • Uses advanced techniques
  • Visual aids for patient confidence
  • Rare expertise in orthopaedic oncology

Cons

  • Long wait times due to high demand
  • Requires GP referral before booking

Professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely caring

He takes the time to listen, explains everything clearly in easy to understand terminology, and makes you feel completely at ease. His expertise and compassionate approach give you real confidence that you’re in the best hands. Highly recommend him to anyone looking for excellent medical care.”

Gave me back quality of life without pain

“I cannot thank Dr Rhys Clark nor his wonderful staff enough for fixing up my knee and giving me back quality of life without pain after my torn meniscus kept me in excruciating pain for Months. I hope I don’t ever need your services ever again – but if I do I won’t hesitate to come back and will recommend you to others!

Thank you ever so much..”

The Joint Studio is led by Professor Riaz Khan, an orthopaedic surgeon with great academic and clinical credentials. This includes adjunct professorships at multiple universities.

With a specialised centre, it makes sense that the service list is quite similar. They cover everything from hip and knee joint replacements to sports injury management and trauma surgery.

Given their attention to serious joint issues, it’s really not the place for minor, early-stage aches.

Alongside their clinical focus, I found it especially reassuring to learn about their investment in advanced planning and technology. Knowing they partner with ArthroLase and use HAiLO robotic-assisted lasers to sculpt bone with sub-millimetre precision.

And the support doesn’t end after your operation. Through their StreaMD system, patients receive a personalised “coach in your pocket”—a text-based service that sends instructions, exercise videos, and tailored guidance from Professor Khan himself.

A friend of mine went through this process and said those reminders helped keep the recovery period a lot less overwhelming, especially during those first few days at home.

Pros

  • Led by a highly qualified surgeon
  • Covers complex ortho cases
  • Uses advanced technology
  • Accurate and consistent outcomes
  • Personalised post-surgery support

Cons

  • Not suited for minor or early-stage joint issues

The daily messages were very encouraging and motivating

“Very caring and understanding of needs is dear Riaz and his staff. This was my second knee replacement (left) by Riaz and he realised that the first one (right), even though 9 years old, was/is exactly the same as the new one. The daily messages were very encouraging and motivating. Thank you for them.”

Did an amazing total knee replacement for me

“The Joint Studio were brilliant. Riaz did an amazing total knee replacement for me, and if you follow the instructions post op, you get the best outcome! Thank you. I would also like to thank the reception staff, who were so helpful at every stage, and answered my queries quickly and nothing was too much trouble. Thank you all.”

The level of genuine care and dedication is rare and very much appreciated

“I can’t speak highly enough of Dr. Meyerkort and his wonderful secretary, Renata. Dr. Meyerkort performed my surgery after I fully ruptured my Achilles tendon, and the entire process — from the operation itself to the follow-up care — has been exceptional. His attention to detail, professionalism, and reassuring manner made a difficult time much easier to navigate. A special thank you also to Renata, who has been incredibly caring and helpful throughout. What stood out most was her personal touch — when I called with a concern, she immediately recognised me by name and warmly asked how I was doing. Despite it being late in the day, she didn’t hesitate to reach out to Dr. Meyerkort and ensure my issue was addressed promptly. That level of genuine care and dedication is rare and very much appreciated. Highly recommend Dr. Meyerkort and his team.”

Fully informed me of the procedure and answered any questions I had

“Dr Meyerkort was my surgeon when I had total knee replacement surgery in Sept 2022. I found him to be very pleasant and understanding. He fully informed me of the procedure and answered any questions I had. The surgery and recovery have been amazing. I was up and moving on the first day and never looked back. He also has the lovely Renata as his office assistant. She is great and nothing is too much trouble .

I would highly recommend Dr Meyerkort . Definitely 5 star *****”

Dr Tom Clifton is an Australian-trained orthopaedic surgeon with impressive qualifications. He completed his specialist training in Perth and once led the Australian Orthopaedic Registrar Association as president.

His specialty is the upper limb, so he’s the person to see for shoulder, wrist, elbow, or hand concerns. That kind of focus means he’s extremely knowledgeable in his area, but if your issue involves another part of the body, you’ll need to see someone else.

What impressed me most, though, was his approach to recovery.  Dr Clifton’s practice takes rehabilitation seriously, looking beyond the immediate problem and focusing on how people actually heal and get back to their routines.

This long-term thinking extends into how he treats you. Surgery isn’t where he starts; instead, he’ll guide you through non-surgical options like physiotherapy, joint injections, or a tailored rehab plan if those are suited to your situation.

Throughout all this, Dr Clifton has a way of putting people at ease. Patients say he takes time to discuss their worries and explains the risks and what recovery might look like.

He makes it a lot easier to figure out the best option and move forward with confidence.

Pros

  • Highly qualified specialist
  • Former registrar association president
  • Strong rehab focus
  • Prefers non-surgical options first
  • Approachable, thorough communication
  • Clear about risks and recovery

Cons

  • Only treats upper limb issues

A brilliant surgeon who plated a difficult fracture of my humerus

“Thank you Dr Tom Clifton. A brilliant surgeon who plated a difficult fracture of my humerus. The skills he applied were amazing and I have full movement of my arm again. Very easy to talk to and he clearly explained everything he planned to do. And Renee, his efficient and empathic secretary, made what was an extremely stressful situation that much easier. A great team that I highly recommend!”
