The 5 Best Orthopaedic Specialists in Sydney for People Ready to Move Freely Again
Let me tell you—nothing unites a family like an unexpected injury.
That’s what happened when my cousin, full of energy at soccer, managed to totally mess up her knee. Suddenly, our family chat was full of advice and tips (plus one odd idea with frozen peas that I’m pretty sure does nothing).
As walking became harder and harder for her, I decided it was time to step in and help my cousin find the best orthopaedic specialists in Sydney.
After lots of phone calls and digging around, we finally found someone who really understood what she needed—not just a band-aid fix, but real help to get her back to normal.
So if you’re tired of dragging an aching knee (or hip, or spine) around Sydney, this list is for you.
How much do orthopaedic specialists charge in Canberra?
Orthopaedic specialists in Canberra generally charge $210–$250 for initial consultations. Surgery fees vary, with common procedures, such as knee replacements, costing around $7,000 for the surgeon’s fee alone.
1. Dr Yeong Joe Lau

Address: G02/1 Elouera St, Braddon ACT 2612
Contact Details: +61 26 230 3835
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Saturday to Sunday – Closed
Dr Yeong Joe Lau is Australian-trained and a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and has done additional training in hip, knee, ankle and foot surgery both here and overseas.
Beyond his credentials, he works on trauma rosters and helps train younger doctors, which, to me, is a good sign you’re dealing with someone respected in their field.
The clinic itself feels organised without being overly clinical. Referrals are reviewed every day and prioritised by urgency. Patients often receive timely responses, sometimes as soon as the next business day.
I also appreciated that Dr Lau is personally involved. He reads referrals himself and keeps patients informed about the next steps.
When it comes to treatments, they cover a wide range of conditions, from hip and knee keyhole surgery to joint replacements, as well as trauma procedures.
Their use of robotic surgery and newer hip replacement techniques seems to make a real difference, too. Some patients I spoke to said their recovery was easier and less painful, which is always encouraging.
If there’s a limitation, it’s the occasional wait times, particularly during busy periods or if your case is more complicated. It’s not unusual for orthopaedics, but still something to keep in mind if you’re hoping for a really fast appointment.
I can confidently say he’s one of the best surgeos I’ve ever met
“Dr. Lau performed FHL Achilles tendon reconstruction surgery on me after I unfortunately re-ruptured my tendon, having initially gone the non-surgical route through the public system. My physiotherapist recommended Dr. Lau, and I can confidently say he’s one of the best surgeons I’ve ever met. From my very first consultation, his caring nature, empathy, understanding, reassurance, support, and professionalism gave me confidence and hope for a second chance at recovery. His daily visits to check on me in hospital post-surgery were genuinely admirable and comforting. Now, a month on from surgery, I’m healing well and about to commence physiotherapy again. I’m truly grateful to be under Dr. Lau’s care. The entire Expert Orthopaedics team, from the reception staff to the physiotherapist, all share his same standard of excellence and compassion. I highly recommend Dr. Lau and his team to anyone needing support with this type of injury. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. 🙏🏽”

2. Dr Mark Porter

Address: Suite 2 of/19 Napier Cl, Deakin ACT 2600
Contact Details: +61 26 253 5404
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Friday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Saturday to Sunday – Closed
Dr Mark Porter is focused on getting people moving again. His qualifications include a Master’s in Sports Medicine and a doctorate, but what stands out most is how that expertise shapes the clinic’s approach.
For instance, they have a daily acute injury clinic, so if you’ve hurt yourself recently, you can be seen quickly without waiting for hours in A&E.
They specialise in non-surgical sports medicine care, including detailed assessments, tailored management plans, and rehabilitation guidance for concussions and soft-tissue injuries. I actually like that surgery isn’t the only focus here.
All of these services are delivered in a thoughtfully designed, purpose-built clinic. With consulting rooms, treatment areas, and modern on-site imaging like X-rays, the facilities are set up for efficiency and comfort.
Navigating the clinic is fairly easy, too—everything is clean, wheelchair accessible, and there are lifts, plus practical touches like free parking behind the building.
Since it’s a private clinic, other patients have mentioned there are still out-of-pocket expenses, and it can end up costing more than the public system if your cover is limited.
The first orthopaedic surgeon I saw who recommended non-operative treatment
“I had Achilles tendon surgery with Dr. Mark Porter on 5 August 2025, three weeks after my rupture. The first orthopaedic surgeon I saw recommended non-operative treatment, but with a 47 mm gap reported on my ultrasound, I knew that was not the right option for me. From our first meeting, Dr. Porter was outstanding. He examined my tendon, clearly explained why surgery was necessary in my case. It was such a relief to finally feel understood and in capable hands. His professionalism, clear communication, and reassuring manner made all the difference. I am now on the road to recovery and couldn’t be more grateful. Highly recommend Dr. Mark Porter.”

A genuinely helpfuand caring person, I would 100% recommend
“I had an issue with a torn retinaculum repair through the public system and after talking to a few people I reached out to Mark to get his opinion. Despite myself living in Melbourne, Mark very graciously gave me his advice and opinion on my experience over the phone which turned out to be absolutely spot on. This helped me to correctly assess my situation and get the appropriate care. A genuinely helpful and caring person I would 100% recommend.”

3. Orthopaedics ACT

Address: Westfield Woden, Level 2/90 Corinna St, Phillip ACT 2606
Contact Details: +61 26 221 9327
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Thursday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Friday – 9:00 to 2:00 PM
- Saturday to Sunday – Closed
Founded in 2013, Orthopaedics ACT has built a reputation around its team of five highly qualified orthopaedic surgeons, including Dr Alexander Burns and Dr Amin Masoumi.
Each has subspecialty training spanning joint reconstruction, spine, trauma, and paediatric orthopaedics, giving the practice a broad and capable scope.
The setup is more integrated than most orthopaedic practices I’ve come across. Beyond the surgeons, there’s a sports and exercise physician, a pain management specialist, a podiatrist, and a nurse-led clinic.
With this collaborative mix of professionals in-house, the care pathway feels much more connected. There is also a clear focus on long-term care, especially for joint replacement patients.
They don’t just patch you up and send you out the door. They take their follow-ups very seriously, and several patients I know have commented on how attentive the team is after surgery. It never feels rushed or impersonal like some larger centres can be.
But there are no walk-in privileges here. You’ll need a GP referral for appointments and rebates, which can add an extra step.
Will need a knee operation eventually, and I will see Paul Smith for this as well
“Had a hip operation in 2018 and it changed my life. Pain free after years of osteoarthritis grief. Will need a knee operation eventually and I will see Prof Paul Smith for this as well. He is also a lovely man.”

Professor Smith is a legend, I can’t recommend him enough
“I had a knee arthroscopy done by Professor Smith yesterday. To my great relief I was able to semi weight bear upon leaving the day surgery. Now able only occasionally using crutches. Pain? What pain? Was it all an illusion? I only had one Endone before leaving hospital (could have skipped it really) and since then I’ve had no pain at all. You’re a legend Prof. I do promise that I’ll still be good before I get back to my gardening. See you in Moruya in a week. Obviously I can’t recommend Paul highly enough.”

4. InMotion Orthopaedics

Address: 42 Corinna St, Phillip ACT 2606
Contact Details: +61 26 221 9321
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Thursday – 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM
- Friday – 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM
- Saturday to Sunday – Closed
InMotion Orthopaedics is led by Dr Damian Smith, and his credentials are prominent throughout the clinic. He’s highly trained, has substantial experience with lower limb surgery, and was the first in Canberra to adopt Mako robotic-arm assisted surgery.
That robotic-assisted joint replacement is based on CT-guided 3D planning and real-time adjustments, which can improve precision, patient satisfaction, and long-term outcomes.
As I looked through their services, the range stood out. From joint replacement to ACL reconstruction, knee arthroscopy, and sports injury management, the clinic appears to be ready for most scenarios.
Their “Injury Express” pathway is particularly useful—weekend injuries can be seen early on Monday evenings, and surgery can be scheduled within days if needed.
They also place a strong emphasis on individualised care.
Patients receive tailored management plans, and people I’ve spoken with frequently point out how reassuring and attentive the team, including support staff, is after surgery.
However, if you’re looking for more specialist options, InMotion can feel a bit limited—care is top-notch, but the choices aren’t as broad.
Very thorough & professional with his approach to my case
“Very friendly professional service from Maree & Caitlin, nothing was a problem & very willing to help out with any enquires. Damian was very thorough & professional with his approach to my case. He always explained everything in detail for my upcoming surgery. This practice goes above & beyond for there patients. I would highly recommend in.motion orthopaedics for anyone who has knee or hip issues.”

5. Canberra Orthopaedics – Dr Joseph Smith

Address: Suite 1B Ground Floor Equinox 1, 70 Kent St, ACT 2600
Contact Details: +61 26 185 8444
Operating Hours:
- Monday to Thursday – 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Friday – 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM
- Saturday to Sunday – Closed
Led by Dr Joseph Smith and Dr Kevin Woods, Canberra Orthopaedics is known for its knee and shoulder expertise, particularly when it comes to sports injuries, accidents, rotator cuff tears and cartilage problems.
They take a careful approach, combining symptoms, physical exams and test results before crafting a treatment plan that fits the person, not just the diagnosis.
People have told me about how the surgeons explain the pros and cons of treatments clearly, which makes decisions easier and less stressful.
Follow-up is a priority as well. Patients appreciated the staff checking in after the surgery and were available to answer questions, no matter how small.
The clinic also shares articles and updates on newer treatments and research, which I took as a sign they’re invested in staying current.
Plus, the location is easy to access—it’s on the ground floor at Equinox 1, with no complicated stairs or confusing layouts to navigate.
I did wonder if the focus on the knee and shoulder could feel limiting for those with other joint issues. It’s not a drawback if those are your needs, but it’s something to keep in mind.
Excellent comms, smooth process, very happy with the procedure
“Joseph did my ACL knee reconstruction (hamstring tendon) a few years ago and I’ve been meaning to write a review. He was brilliant throughout. Excellent comms, smooth process, very happy with the procedure.”

Everyone showed full compassion, communication, and genuine advise
“I can’t express the care and service that was provided to me from Doctor Joseph Smith and his team, including those all involved on the day of my surgery at National Capital Private. From walking into his practice and getting greeted by the cheerful and friendly receptionist to the end of my procedure, everyone showed full compassion, communication and genuine advise. Consultations with Dr Smith are very easy to have, nothing hidden and he takes his time to explain and work out ways to give you options. I have a med condition that will require long term care and I am so glad to know I am being looked after by this to top crew.”
