Adriano Carbone has been in the business for 40 years, and you can feel it the moment you walk through the doors of his Melbourne atelier.
This is a studio that does everything entirely by hand. What’s even cooler and definitely new to me is that clients are welcome to come in and watch their garment take shape in real time.
He handles the craft while his wife and business partner, Maria, brings warmth and energy to every client interaction. Their portfolio stretches from the usual business suits all the way to military uniforms and full wardrobes for major theatrical productions.
Their Italian heritage carries through in every garment he produces, right down to the fabrics themselves, sourced from the finest mills in Italy and England.
One long-time client described them as perfectionists who would never let a piece leave the workshop unless it met Adriano’s exacting standards, and other clients echoed this as well.
This level of perfectionism also comes with multiple fittings, though loyal clients don’t seem to mind, with many returning every season to build their wardrobes piece by piece. What they do mind, though, is the lack of branches outside of Melbourne.
